Top Tooters Take State Fair Whistling Crown

DES MOINES, IA (08/23/2009)(readMedia)-- Mark Truesdell, 58, of Des Moines won first place in the Adult division of the State Fair Whistling competition held Thursday at the 2009 Iowa State Fair.

Thomas McCargar, 28, of Brooklyn, N.Y. claimed second place and Wes Enos, 56, of Altoona won third place.

In the Youth division, Henry Corbin, 12, of Nevada won first place.

Lydia Brace, 14, of Indianola claimed second place and Jessica Taylor, 15, of Granger earned third place.

Each participant was allowed to perform two songs or whistle three minutes.

The contest was part of "Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions" in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.

"State Fair Time" runs through August 23. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
