DES MOINES, IA (09/22/2011)(readMedia)-- State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald presented a $1,000 College Savings Iowa account to an Ames High School student today. Madison McMinn was chosen to receive the award from the thousands who entered the contest while visiting the College Savings Iowa booth at the Iowa State Fair. Madison is the daughter of Mary and Howard McMinn of Ames.
"With college only four years away for Madison, we are glad we can help relieve some of the financial burden for her and her family when that time arrives," stated Fitzgerald. "Saving ahead of time is one of the most significant things a family can do to help make college a reality for their child. It can reduce a parent's need to borrow to cover educational expenses, which can help them-and their child-get through college with less debt," stated Fitzgerald.
"September is College Savings month, which means it's time for parents and grandparents to do their homework as well," Fitzgerald stated. "Families who start saving early will be better prepared to meet the high cost of college when the time comes." Iowans can register by September 30 for a chance to win a $1,000 College Savings Iowa account. To learn how, go to www.my529iowaplan.com.
