NASHVILLE, TN (10/23/2012)(readMedia)-- The Trevecca men's cross country team earned four awards at the first-ever G-MAC Cross Country Championships. The team finished with a program best team time while Josh Winskie and Reed Mitchell earned 2012 G-MAC First Team honors. Winskie finished ninth overall earning the 2012 G-MAC Freshman of the Year honor.
The event is held at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course on the Cedarville University campus. The 8000 meter course is host to numerous cross country events each year. Trevecca will join its fellow NCCAA member schools on this same course in three weeks for the NCCAA National Championships.
Winskie crossed the finish line at 27:37.52 just ahead of teammate Reed Mitchell who finished at 27:40.67. Michael Pretorius earned second team all-conference honors in 12th place and a time of 28:05.14. Spencer Cole was 17th, less than 10 seconds from 15th and the last all-conference spot. Cole ran the course in 28:28.68.
Trevecca Head Coach Brad Peterson was pleased with the men's overall performance today. The continues were more difficult than one might think he said, "This turned out to be a difficult day to run with cold, wet, and windy conditions. The course is challenging, especially the hills on the men's side. "I was so proud of our men for stepping up and following the race plan. We ran our fastest team time of the year even under the adverse conditions and all of the athletes ran at least their second best time of their year and their career."
Peterson continued with individual praise, "Josh Winskie came into the conference meet ranked 12th overall and second of all freshman, but finished 9th earning first team all conference and freshman of the year. Reed Mitchell was ranked 15th making him a long shot to be top 10, but used an incredible kick over the last 400 meters to make the top 10 and first team all-conference. Michael Pretorius and Spencer Cole ran their usual great races for 12th and 17th. It was great to see Michael get second team all conference and we were hoping Spencer could get the last spot but he just missed it."
Peterson concluded by saying, "Cedarville is the 14th ranked team in the nation and they proved deserving of that ranking. We have a ways to go but we will get to their level in a couple years. I truly believe that. I am looking forward to taking both teams to NCCAA's in three weeks. I think both can have a strong showing there. It is neat to see all of the men qualify and seven of the eight women also qualified."
All of Trevecca's harriers qualified for the 2012 NCCAA Championships. The event will be run at the Elivn R. King Course on the Cedarville University campus on November 10. The men's race will start at 10 a.m.
