U.S. Army Field Band Chamber Brass Presents Free Concert at LVC

ANNVILLE, PA (02/03/2011)(readMedia)-- The U.S. Army Field Band Chamber Brass will perform in the third and final Distinguished Artists Series concert on Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall of the Blair Music Center at Lebanon Valley College. Sponsored by Capital Blue Cross, free tickets are available to the public by calling 717-867-6275.

The Chamber Brass program will include J.S. Bach's Sonata in g minor, John Philip Sousa's Sabres and Spurs, Jan Koetsier's Kinderzirkus Op.79/B fur Brass Quintett, and other works by Sherwin, Picchi, and Crespo.

A master class for trumpet and trombone players is scheduled for Feb. 23 from 7–8:15 pm in Lutz Hall. This is appropriate for high school students and other interested musicians. On Feb. 24, the full ensemble will be working with brass students in Lutz Hall from 11 a.m. – 12:15 pm. Admission to both master classes is free and open to the public.

The U.S. Army Field Band Chamber Brass is an official ensemble of The United States Army Field Band of Washington, D.C. Formed in 2003 and consisting exclusively of members of the Concert Band, the quintet provides musical performances for the general public as well as serving as a component of the Field Band's educational outreach program. Members of The Chamber Brass draw upon their experiences with some of the nation's finest orchestras, concert bands, and chamber ensembles as they conduct clinics and perform recitals in middle schools and high schools.

The ensemble includes Valley alumnus Sergeant First Class Todd Sturniolo '01, trombone; Master Sergeant Michael Klima, trumpet; Staff Sergeant Nicholas Althouse, trumpet; Staff Sergeant Stephen Aaron, horn; and Sergeant First Class Matthew Nelson, tuba. Sturniolo is a native of Hagerstown, Md, and joined the Field Band in 2003. He earned a bachelor of arts in music performance and a bachelor of science in music education from LVC.

"This year's concert series showcased some of the finest performers in classical music," said Dr. Mark Mecham, chair of the Music Department and Clark and Edna Carmean Distinguished Professor of Music at LVC. "We are thrilled that the third and final concert includes an LVC alumnus known for his own achievements with the U.S. Army Field Band's Chamber Brass, a select ensemble from this top military band."
