USC Aiken Reads Donated Books to Elementary School Students

AIKEN, SC (02/28/2018) University of South Carolina Aiken students read books they collected to North Aiken Elementary School students.

The effort was part of USC Aiken's Black History Month activities. The university's Black History Month Steering Committee asked the entire campus and greater communities to donate books that were written or illustrated by African-American authors or feature African-American protagonists or heroes.

University students collected more than 100 books. They were delivered to several schools throughout the district, including Aiken Elementary, Schofield Middle and Aiken High Schools.

"Read one more, please" one second grader pleaded at the end of one book.

This particular book delivery - and the reading by USC Aiken students - happened just days before Read Across America.

According to its website, National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2. The date coincides with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the author of several popular children's books.

"Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school," NEA's website states.
