UWS Open Hearts + BP Gale Brewer Celebrate Thanksgiving with Lucerne Residents + Others
As the men of the Lucerne wait in limbo for court decision, UWS Open Hearts will hand out 400 individual Thanksgiving meals to unhoused individuals
NEW YORK, NY (11/24/2020) (readMedia)-- As Lucerne residents await a final decision from Judge Debra James on whether or not they have to move downtown, Upper West Side Open Hearts and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer will hand out 400 individual Thanksgiving meals to the residents of the Lucerne and others experiencing homelessness. Goddard Riverside -- an UWS nonprofit that also provides jobs to Lucerne residents -- supplied the freshly prepared Thanksgiving meals in lieu of their traditional sit-down community Thanksgiving meal.
Event will be held rain or shine. There will be covering to keep food dry.
UWS Open Hearts also planned multiple other socially distanced Thanksgiving events to help ease this difficult time of year for those with estranged family relationships, starting in the morning with grab-and-go coffee and donuts at The Belleclaire, followed by a spiritual walk and talk where shelter residents can commune with local faith leaders. After the Thanksgiving meal distribution, there will be another spiritual walk and talk, and a volunteer-led AA meeting.
On Monday, Judge James was expected to release a decision on the case, but she has since delayed without a new date. On October 19th, Judge Debra James granted the men a TRO in response to a suite of affidavits attesting to the irrational and harmful nature of the move.
