University of Mississippi pair to speak at April 17 Ideas and Images event at Flagler College

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (04/04/2014)(readMedia)-- University of Mississippi Professor of History and Southern Studies Ted Ownby and graduate assistant Anna Hamilton will speak at Flagler College as part of the College's "Ideas and Images" program on April 17.

Dr. Ownby, who will speak on "Brotherhood and 'Brotherhoodism' in the Civil Rights Era American South" is the author of "American Dreams in Mississippi: Consumers, Poverty, and Culture, 1830-1998" and "Subduing Satan: Religion, Recreation and Manhood in the Rural South, 1865-1920." He is also the editor of "Black and White: Cultural Interaction in the Antebellum South" and co-editor of "The Mississippi Encyclopedia."

He writes and teaches classes on the social and cultural history of the American South and serves as the Director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi.

Hamilton will present a lecture on "Bottling Hell: Myth-Making, Cultural Identity and the Datil Pepper of St. Augustine."

The lectures will take place at 7 p.m. in the Flagler Room of Ponce de Leon Hall, 74 King St., St. Augustine.

"Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists Program" features an international composition of artists and authors, introducing a fresh and creative component to the greater St. Augustine community.
