Daily starting Sept. 5 – New Moon Art Show: A Sense of Place

Artist Diane Leifheit and photographer Jon Chodat will exhibit their works at the Paul Smith's College VIC until Thursday, Oct. 3. Diane Leifheit creates fine art pastel paintings of the Adirondack rural wilderness. Jon Chodat photographs wildlife and nature, as well. Saturdays, Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28 – Interpretive Canoe Paddles

These two-hour trips provide a chance to explore the varied aquatic habitats at the VIC. Participants view Heron Marsh and Barnum Brook and paddle through a bog to Barnum Pond. Paddles are offered twice a day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. $20/adult; $50 for the immediate family. Fridays, Sept. 6, 13 and 20 – Farmers' Market

The Paul Smith's College Farmers' Market features fresh vegetables and berries in season, breads and other baked goods, herbs, jams, jellies and plants. The market, which is part of the Adirondack Farmers' Market Cooperative, is open every Friday throughout the summer from 2-5:30 p.m.

The Paul Smith's College VIC and Adirondack Raptors invites you to spend Saturday afternoons with live birds of prey. Sunday, Sept. 1, and Wednesday, Sept. 11 & 25 – Mushroom Walks with Susan Hopkins

Join mushroom expert Susan Hopkins on a casual walk in the woods in search of mushrooms and fungi. We will discuss and identify poisonous and edible species and point out some of medicinal value, too. This walk will last about 2 1/2 hours and will be held rain or shine. Bring a lunch and stay longer if you like. The Paul Smith's College VIC will host a 5K trail run every other Wednesday until Sept. 25. Runners get a chance to check out the VIC trails and meet other trail enthusiasts. Registration starts at 6 p.m. The runs start at 6:30 p.m. $5/person.

Sunday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 2 – Nature Walks

The VIC will hold a naturalist-led interpretive walk every day at 1 p.m. Participants meet in the visitor's center for an hour-long walk exploring different aspects of nature in the Adirondack Park. Sunday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 2 – Butterfly House

There's still time to check out the Butterfly House before it closes on Labor Day. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Monday, Sept. 2. Visitors can view native butterflies up close and learn about the life stages and migratory patterns of these colorful insects. Butterfly House volunteers will be on hand to help identify different species and answer questions. The Butterfly House is made possible by Friends of the VIC (https://paulsmiths.thankyou4caring.org/page.aspx?pid=427).

Tuesday, Sept. 17 – Volunteer BBQ

VIC Volunteers will meet at 5 p.m. for a barbecue and a preview of upcoming events and activities. VIC volunteers provide visitor information, perform stewardship projects and participate in citizen-science projects. Volunteers come together on a monthly basis to socialize and talk about upcoming events and projects with the VIC staff. Those interested in volunteering are welcome to attend. Hamburgers and hot dogs provided. Bring a place setting and a salad or a dessert to share.

Tuesday, Sept. 17 – An Evening with Jim Zumbo

Jim Zumbo, a 1960 graduate of Paul Smith's College, former editor of Outdoor Life magazine and star of the TV show Jim Zumbo Outdoors, will give a talk at the Paul Smith's College VIC. Zumbo spent 15 years as a forester and wildlife biologist before his 30-year career with Outdoor Life magazine. He's written 25 books on hunting and fishing and has published thousands of articles and photographs in a variety of other magazines. $5/person. Thursday, Sept. 26 – Strengthening the APA

This one-day conference, organized by the Adirondack Explorer, features panels on water quality in the Adirondacks and conservation design, as well as a keynote address by landscape planner Randall Arendt. The Artist at Work Studio Tour, hosted by Saranac Lake Art Works, occurs during the peak fall foliage, and the Paul Smith's College VIC will serve as a rendezvous site and gathering space for the artists to meet and exhibit their work for the studio tour. Free.

Saturday, Sept. 28 – The Adirondack Rural Skills and Homesteading Festival

This celebration of rural skills will showcase the talents of a bygone era with a distinctly Adirondack flair. Exhibitions will include logging and farming with draft horses sponsored by the Paul Smith's College Draft Horse Club and a demonstration of competitive lumberjack sports by the Paul Smith's College Woodsmen's Team. The festivities take place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. $5/person or $10/carload.
