The Paul Smith's College VIC will be closed Mondays in the month of November, and until there is enough snow for skiing. The VIC will be closed Saturday, Nov. 23, through Monday, Dec. 2, for the Thanksgiving break, as well.
Daily – VIC Orienteering Map
Purchase an orienteering map for $8 at the VIC and find your way to different checkpoints where you collect secret codes. Participants who find at least five codes are eligible for prizes and a 10 percent discount on a compass at Blue Line Sports in Saranac Lake.
Saturday, Nov. 2 – VIC Natural History Training: Barking Up the Right Tree
During this members-only event, Friends of the VIC and VIC volunteers will learn to identify trees by their bark and other characteristics. Join VIC naturalist Brian McAllister from 10 a.m.-noon for an informative walk in the VIC woods. Hot beverages and snacks provided. This event is underwritten by Friends of the VIC.
Sunday, Nov. 3 – New Moon Art Show
Artists Edith Urban and Matt Paul are exhibiting their work at the Paul Smith's College VIC from Sunday, Nov. 3, until Sunday, Dec. 1.
Tuesday-Saturday, Nov. 5-10 – Canoe-Building Demonstration
Bill Sommerfield, a 1966 graduate of Paul Smith's College, will demonstrate the art of ultra-light skin-on-form canoe building at the VIC. Stop by the exhibit space from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. daily to watch progress.
Monday, Nov. 11 – No-School Days at the VIC
Why don't we see flowers in the fall? How do animals, plants and people bear the cold months in the northern forest? Join VIC ecologist and naturalist Michelle Berrus from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. to explore these questions. Program designed for children age 7-11. Please dress appropriately for indoor and outdoor play. Bring a lunch and a snack. Hot cocoa provided. Preregister by 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, by calling (518) 327-6241. $35/person, $25 for Friends of the VIC.
Other No-School Day programs, with various themes, will be held from noon-4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, and Friday, Dec. 6; and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23; Friday, Dec. 27; Monday, Dec. 30; Wednesday, Jan. 1; and Friday, Jan 3.
Thursday, Nov. 14 – Owl Prowl
Come walk the VIC woods at 7:30 p.m. and see whooooo's calling! We'll discuss owl natural history, learn some call notes and listen for them, too. $10/person, $5 for Friends of the VIC.
Friday, Nov. 15 – Concert: Songwriters in the Round

Saturday, Nov. 16 – VIC Natural History Training: Project Feeder Watch
Attend this training session to learn local-bird identification and help us count birds at our bird feeders Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 a.m.-noon, November through April. Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology heads Project Feeder Watch, which is supported by the VIC and underwritten by Friends of the VIC.
Wednesday, Nov. 20 – Astronomy Night at The VIC
We're rolling out the 16 inch Celestron telescope at 7:30 p.m. for some late-fall stargazing. $10/person, free for Friends of the VIC.
Monday, Dec. 9 – High-Tunnel School
Learn how to build and get the most out of your high-tunnel greenhouse, or unheated hoophouse, with Cornell Cooperative Extension. Speakers include Amy Ivy, specialist with the Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture program and Judson Reid, specialist with the Cornell Vegetable program. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. $25/person. Tuesday, Dec. 10 – Volunteer Potluck
VIC volunteers meet at 5 p.m. for a potluck supper and a preview of upcoming events and activities. VIC volunteers provide visitor information, perform stewardship projects and participate in citizen science projects. Those interested in volunteering are welcome. Saturday, Dec. 14 – Winter Birds of the Adirondacks
Join us from 9:30 a.m.-noon and learn about birds that spend their winters in the Adirondacks. Bring binoculars and your favorite birding field guide. $10/person, $5 for Friends of the VIC.
Saturday, Dec. 14 – Winter Wonders Art Show and Sale
