Upper Crust Claims State Fair Pie Baking Awards

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2019) (readMedia)-- The top pie bakers from across the state presented their best fruit and cream pies to the judged in the Machine Shed Pies competition, judged Monday, at the 2019 Iowa State Fair.

First Place Overall in the Cream Pie Division was won by Jackie Garnett of Des Moines. Alaina Ingebritson of Hubbard earned Second Place Overall and Marianne Carlson of Jefferson claimed Third Place Overall.

Louise Piper of Garner won First Place Overall in the Fruit Pie Division. Joyce Larson of New Market claimed Second Place Overall and Marianne Carlson of Jefferson earned Third Place Overall.

Keri Crowley of Indianola and Tanya hardy of Osceola tied for the Sweepstakes award.

Entries were judged on quality of the crust, filling, appearance and originality.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 166 divisions, 715 classes and over 7,300 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
