Vietnam War Remembrance Day, March 30, 2012

AUGUSTA, ME (03/29/2012)(readMedia)-- Governor Paul R. LePage signed a proclamation today declaring March 30, 2012 as Vietnam War Remembrance Day. The proclamation recognizes the 64,000 Mainers who served during the Vietnam War. Maine lost 343 young men during the war and 12 are still missing.

WHEREAS, 48,000 men and women from the State of Maine served the Nation's call in Vietnam while an additional 16,000 Mainers were serving worldwide during the Vietnam War Era; and

WHEREAS, the State of Maine has 343 names etched on that black granite wall in the Nation's capitol and 12 of our young men are still missing in Southeast Asia; and

WHEREAS, as a State, we acknowledged our deep respect and admiration of our men and women Vietnam veterans by setting aside March 30, 2012 as Vietnam War Remembrance Day; and

WHEREAS, on this day, we recall these sacrifices and say to those who served, those who gave their lives, those who were disabled, and those who are still missing in Southeast Asia; thank you for service, we have not forgotten you, we will not forget you,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAUL R. LEPAGE, do hereby recognize March 30, 2012 as

VIETNAM WAR REMEMBRANCE DAY

throughout the State of Maine, and urge all citizens to recognize this observance.
