ALBANY, NY (07/15/2013)(readMedia)-- Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts is the 2013 recipient of the 2013 Miriam Maccoby Netter Fellowship, The New York Bar Foundation announced today.

Charles Chen, a legal fellow for Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), will use the $5,000 fellowship to help the organization with intellectual property matters that affect its clients, including copyright, trademark and patent law. The State Bar Association's Intellectual Property Law Section created and funds the fellowship.

"We are pleased to present the Miriam Maccoby Netter Fellowship to Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Charles Chen's extensive background in intellectual property law will benefit the VLA and help them fulfill their mission," said Bar Foundation President Cristine Cioffi (Cioffi•Slezak•Wildgrube).

Chen graduated from the University of British Columbia and earned his law degree and masters of laws in intellectual property law from the University of New Hampshire School of Law. He previously was a legal intern with the U.S. Copyright Office of the Library of Congress and a general management and licensing trainee for Broadway Asia.

"I am honored to receive the Miriam Maccoby Netter Fellowship. Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts fosters my passion for practicing intellectual property law and gaining direct hands-on experience with clients in New York City. VLA opens up opportunities because it is such an engaging place to interact with artists and arts organizations and their unique legal needs," said Chen. "I am looking forward to taking full advantage of the opportunities this fellowship presents."

The fellowship honors the late Miriam "Mimi" Maccoby Netter of Delmar, a former member and leader of the Intellectual Property Law Section, for contributing to the section's success and growth.
