ALBANY, NY (10/08/2010)(readMedia)-- WAMC Northeast Public Radio's flagship morning program, The Roundtable, will broadcast a special series, Mixed Ingredients: Food in History, Literature, Art, and Culture in America, on October 12th through the 15th from 11 a.m. to noon. Mixed Ingredients will provide audiences with an in-depth look-through the lenses of history, literature, art, and culture-at the role of food in the American experience. WAMC's Joe Donahue, Sarah LaDuke and Katie Britton will talk with scholars, authors, artists, journalists, and historians about the significance of food in American culture, history, literature and art.

Alan Chartock, President and CEO of WAMC says, "This one is really going to be fun as well as informative. WAMC does more about humanities than any other radio station in the world or, for that matter, the universe. But this series on food is going to be an award winner. We are proud to be doing this work."

This four-day series will cover topics such as: the historical impact of the food industry on how and what we eat; the growing popularity of the food memoir genre of literature; the prominence of food and drink in fine artworks; and the relationship between the Western diet and popular American culture.

Joe Donahue, host of the Roundtable says, "This is one of the most interesting, complex, and fun radio projects I have ever worked on. We cover a lot of ground in this series and it's tied together by the deep-seeded passion that all of our guests have for the subject and its future."

Special guests will include: James Beard Award-winning author of the books Cod and Salt Mark Kurlansky, who will describe our nation's culinary history before the national highway system and modern refrigeration methods; former editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine Ruth Reichl, who will discuss historic and contemporary writing about food including the increasingly popular food memoir genre of literature; celebrated author of the bestselling books, In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma Michael Pollan, who will discuss the contemporary American diet and its cultural underpinnings; and more.
