HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (04/24/2012)(readMedia)-- On Friday, April 20, Hampden-Sydney College senior Joseph Walton Milam III received the Harvey B. Morgan Award recognizing a graduating senior of integrity and excellence of character, who has successfully completed the requirements of the Public Service Program and who demonstrates an interest in government service. This award was established in 2000 by Mary Helen Morgan to pay tribute to her husband and his life of public service.
The Public Service Program, developed by the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest, includes a two-year concentration of classes, a research project, and an internship.
A Patrick Henry Scholar, Walton has served as a Student Court Advisor and now serves on the Appeals Committee. He is a member of the varsity soccer team, the Garnet & Grey Society (admissions tour guide), and the social fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Walton completed his internship with the Danville Habitat for Humanity office. After law school, Walton plans to return to Danville where he intends to combine a law practice with active engagement in public education and in civic affairs in his hometown. An economics major, Walton is a graduate of Woodberry Forest School and is the son of The Honorable & Mrs. Joseph W. Milam, Jr. of Danville.
