DES MOINES, IA (08/11/2018) (readMedia)-- Michelle Westphal of Waterloo won First Place Overall in the C & H Canned Jellies competition, judged on August 8 prior to the start of the 2018 Iowa State Fair.
Louise Piper of Garner claimed Second Place Overall and the Reserve Sweepstakes award. Rod Zeitler of Iowa City earned Third Place Overall and the Sweepstakes crown.
Jellies are easy to make but hard to master. They're made with fruit and sugar but unlike jams, marmalades, and preserves, a true jelly is translucent with no seeds or fruit in sight. Jelly is expected to hold its shape while still be easy to scoop out with a spoon.
Entries were judged on appearance, flavor and consistency.
