WALLA WALLA, WA (05/17/2012)(readMedia)-- Whitman College senior Elana Congress, a native of Larchmont, New York, was recently chosen to receive the Mensch Award by the Board of Congregation Beth Israel.
Each year the Congregation presents this award to the Whitman College senior or seniors who have participated in both the Walla Walla and Whitman Jewish communities, and who fully embody the meaning of the Yiddish word, "mensch." A mensch is an upright, honorable and decent human being; someone of noble character, someone to admire and emulate.
Congress, the daughter of Barry Johnson and Bobbie Congress, is a 2008 graduate of Mamaroneck High School. She is currently a philosophy major at Whitman.
