William Woods Students from Fulton Named Outstanding Students

FULTON, MO (05/17/2011)(readMedia)-- Three William Woods University students from Fulton recently were named Outstanding Students by the Student Alumni Council. Receiving awards at the co-curricular banquet were Nicole Elliott, Outstanding Senior; Ilana Archuleta, Outstanding Sophomore, and Taylor Oestreich Outstanding Freshman.

In addition, other students named outstanding were: Freshmen, Catherine Fuhs of Colorado Springs, Colo., and AnneMarie Connelly of Highland, Ill.; Sophomores, Lucas Watson of Louisiana, Mo., and Katherine Wortmann of Mexico, Mo.; Juniors, Zach Hurst and Jessica Bargate of Jefferson City and Andrea Weed of Kansas City, and Seniors, Lisa Burke of Louisburg, Kan.; Liza Payne of Zionsville, Ind.; Ann DeHart of Keosauqua, Iowa, and Melanie White of Manhattan, Kan.

The Outstanding Student Awards are the only awards at William Woods University bestowed on students by the nomination and vote of other students. Nominees must demonstrate academic achievement, campus and community involvement and leadership.

Elliott is an active member of the Delta Gamma sorority and has served as vice president of communications, as well as WWU Panhellenic vice president and president. She was named outstanding junior and senior Greek.

She has served as WWU recruitment counselor, on the United Way Board, Relay for Life Committee, Up 'till Dawn, First Impressions, WWU Thespians and Dance Ovations Dance Company. She has also volunteered at Presbyterian Manor.

Archuleta is a member of the Chi Omega sorority and is the new member educator and has served on the Panhellenic Council as vice president for programming. She was elected to serve on the Tau Theta chapter of Chi Omega Executive Committee as a freshman and sophomore. She participates in Chi Omega's philanthropy week, as well as all Greek philanthropy weeks. She participates in raising money for the Make-a-Wish foundation.

She is a University Ambassador and a sophomore class representative on the Student Alumni Council. She writes for the Talon Newspaper. She also is a volunteer child care provider at First Methodist Church nursery and summer Bible School.

Oestreich is a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, where he is the philanthropy chair. He has been the Special Olympics basketball coach for three years, participated in the Dudes for Diapers program, the Adopt-a-Highway program and volunteered at campus blood drives. He participates in various Greek philanthropy week programs.
