Wyatt Lance Receives Awards at Ashland University Juried Student Art Exhibition

ASHLAND, OH (03/18/2011)(readMedia)-- Wyatt Lance of Lakeville received two awards for his submitted art work at the 2011 Ashland University Juried Student Art Exhibition.

Lance received a $100 art area award in digital art for his digital print entitled "Phase 3 Continuum." This award was sponsored by the University's Coburn Art Gallery.

He also received the People's Choice Award for this piece, earning a Barnes and Noble gift card. The award was selected by the Gallery patrons during the opening reception Thursday, March 17 and it was sponsored by Cynthia Perry.

Lance is majoring in fine arts and is the son of Dave and Carla Lance, 7607 State Route 179.

The outside juror for the exhibition was Kate Shannon, assistant professor of art at Ohio State University-Mansfield Campus, and she was responsible for selecting the exhibition consisting of 73 artworks from among a competitive field of 121 student entries and also designating the award recipients.

Shannon especially enjoyed Lance's work, observing his inspirations drawn from mass media and advertising to creat "lively digital landscapes."

"It was a pleasure to view and select the works included in this dynamic student exhibition," Shannon said. "This is an exciting opportunity for Ashland University students to experience one of the most important, and perhaps most challenging, parts of the artistic process: to remove work from the comfort of the classroom or studio and present it to the outside world. It is evident that these talented students are both prepared and excited to meet this challenge.

"Overall, this exhibition includes an exciting variety of materials, approaches and ideas," she said. "Congratulations to each applicant for having the courage to submit. Please remember that a juried show is as much a reflection on the subjective tastes of the juror as it is the quality of the artwork that is submitted."

The Student Exhibition will run in the Coburn Gallery until April 1 and the Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
