LATHAM, NY (12/05/2013)(readMedia)-- Wynantskill resident Martin "Marty" Dinan, a veteran of three wars and a civilian police officer, has been promoted to Colonel in the New York Army National Guard.

Dinan, who earned a commission in the Army Reserve through the ROTC program in 1986, is currently serving as the commander of the 53rd Digital Liaison Detachment, a small unit based at the historic Park Avenue Armory in New York City.

Dinan served in the Persian Gulf War of 1991 as a member of the Army's 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, he deployed to Iraq in 2004/2005 with the Troy-based 42nd Infantry Division, and went to Afghanistan in 2011 as an advisor to the District Chief of Police and the District governor in Panjwai District, Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Dinan's military career includes service in the Active Army, the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. He has served as a tank platoon leader, tank company executive officer, cavalry squadron support operations officer, squadron adjutant, headquarters company commander, assistant operations officer, and division headquarters company commandant, transportation officer and resource management officer. He also served a Joint Force Headquarters as head of the exercise and evaluations section.

He served as commander of the Auburn-based 102nd Military Police Company from 2007 to 2010. The unit had elements located across upstate New York.

In this position Dinan was also responsible for commanding the New York National Guard's CERFP-CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Enhanced-yield explosive) Enhanced Response Force Package, a unit trained to respond to attacks , rescue victims, decontaminate them and provide medical treatment.

Dinan responded to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in New York City and also served in the New York National Guard response to a North Country ice storm and tornado in Mechanicville in the 1990s.

Dinan holds a degree in sociology from the College of Saint Rose and earned a Masters in Strategic Studies from the Army War College in 2011. He is a graduate of the Amor Officer Basic Course, the Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course, the Army Command and Staff Services School, the Army Comptroller Course, and the Army Command and General Staff College.

His awards include two awards of the Bronze Star, the Combat Action Badge, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Kuwait Liberation Medal. The Southwest Asia Serve Ribbon, the Valorous Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Citation, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Parachutist Badge.

He and his wife Katrina have two sons, Christopher and Matthew and a grandson, Liam Cash Dinan.
