Danielle Doubt, a Yellow Springs native who graduated from St. Mary's College of Maryland this spring, has been awarded a U.S. Student Fulbright Award for the 2012-2013 academic year to Turkey. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and is designed to promote understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
Doubt, who graduated magna cum laude with an English major, received an English Teaching Assistantship Award, which will place her in a teaching position in a university in Turkey. Her work will focus on issues of women in relation to sustainable agricultural practices, local food movements, and community gardens. This work will be an extension of her St. Mary's Project, which was based on gender, food, and sustainability in a global context.
"I could not have [won the Fulbright Award] without my academic experiences at St. Mary's," says Doubt. "My experience at the Writing Center really helped my English Teaching Assistantship application." During her time at St. Mary's, Doubt worked in the Writing Center, where she assisted English as a Second Language (ESL) students with reading and writing.
St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
