HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (05/09/2013)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 25, Hampden-Sydney College senior Yonathan Tarekegne Ararso received the James R.T. Hewett Biology Award, presented by Dr. Kristian M. Hargadon '01, Elliott Assistant Professor of Biology. This award is given to the student who has best distinguished himself by service to the department and exhibited outstanding scholarship, and whose exemplary dedication, motivation, and intellectual curiosity make him an ideal role model for all biology majors. It is named in memory of James R.T. "Jas" Hewett, Class of 2001.
A Patrick Henry Scholar, Yonathan is co-founder of both the Hampden-Sydney Journal of Sciences and the Hampden-Sydney Biology Colloquium. He serves as Captain of the varsity cross country team and as President of the International Club and the Society for Collegiate Journalists. Yonathan was Editor-in-Chief of the student newspaper, The Hampden-Sydney Tiger, in 2011-2012 and is a Senior Member of the Union Philantropic Literary Society. He is a member of the honorary societies Phi Beta Kappa (academics), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Chi Beta Phi (sciences) and the professional scientific fraternity Alpha Chi Sigma. A biology major, Yonathan graduated from Woodberry Forest School and is the son of Mr. Tarekegne Ararso & Mrs. Elizabeth Demeke of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
