Youth Cooks Claim State Fair Awards

DES MOINES, IA (09/17/2024) (readMedia)-- Aspiring cooks between the ages of 12 and 17 squared off in more than 20 classes in the Casey's Intermediate Favorite Creations contest judged Thursday, August 15, at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Cora Oleson of Des Moines won First Place Overall. Lauryn Paulson of West Des Moines received Second Place Overall, and Claire Tigges of Waukee claimed Third Place Overall.

Mia Frangopol of Mingo was awarded the Sweepstakes award, and Drew Gilbert of West Des Moines received the Reserve Sweepstakes award.

Entries were judged on taste, texture, appearance and creativity.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 140 divisions, 726 classes and nearly 6,400 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
