Zeldin Comments on Broadwater Proposal

Calls Governor to Halt Platform Deployment

MASTIC, NY (03/24/2008)(readMedia)-- The endorsed Republican candidate for New York's First Congressional District today criticized the recent approval of the Broadwater LNG project by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and called on the governor of New York to negotiate a better proposal for Long Island residents.

GOP candidate Lee Zeldin, running to represent the Eastern Long Island district, challenged FERC's findings and called on newly installed Governor David Paterson to block any move by the company to move the project into the Long Island Sound.

"For starters, Broadwater doesn't need to be in the middle of the Long Island Sound, and Governor Paterson has an excellent opportunity to take an important stand in his young administration," said Zeldin. "I recognize that we have a need for the energy provided by Broadwater, but I would be more open to consideration under the following conditions: •Move the platform into the ocean; and •Channel more energy directly to Long Island rather than spreading it out to other regions."

Zeldin also acknowledged the need for alternative forms of energy and reducing America's reliance on foreign oil.

"The reality is that as a society, we need to move towards clean energy and I will support worthwhile initiatives targeted at protecting the environment," said Zeldin. "Likewise, our dependence on foreign oil is a national security issue and any measures taken to alleviate this burden benefits our country on numerous levels."

Zeldin served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He was a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was a JAG attorney deployed to Iraq. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island.
