Zeldin Reaffirms Call For Countywide Sewers

Candidate considers problem an emergency for Suffolk county

MASTIC, NY (04/28/2008)(readMedia)-- The endorsed Republican candidate for Long Island's First Congressional District today reasserted the need for a countywide solution to address Suffolk's severe sewage modernization requirements.

Additionally, GOP candidate Lee Zeldin also reaffirmed his anti-earmark stance, and emphasized the importance of using transparent, open and tested processes like project and categorical grants to support these projects.

"I reaffirm Suffolk's need for a modern, countywide sewage system," said Zeldin. "People need to stop worrying about how are we going to pay for sewers, and start realizing that we don't have any way to pay for not having sewers any more. This will revitalize downtowns, produce jobs, bolster our economy, and reduce our property taxes."

Instead of earmarks-a method of legislation that Zeldin pledges to never employ-Zeldin urges the use of federal grants competitively vetted prior to award. Zeldin concluded, "Regarding funding the project, grants are the foundation of federal aid. However, noncompetitive earmark grants undermine democratic processes."

Zeldin served as an aide to State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle. The Shirley resident studied at the University at Albany, graduated from Albany Law School, and earned his commission through Army ROTC. He was a paratrooper, prosecutor and magistrate with the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps. In the summer of 2006, he was a JAG attorney deployed to Iraq. He is currently an attorney at Raiser & Kenniff on Long Island.
