PEORIA, IL (03/19/2009)(readMedia)-- The Genesee Community College Women's basketball team is on a roll! The Lady Cougars advanced past the first round of the national tournament by beating Kalamazoo Valley Community College (Kalamazoo, MI) 64-55 yesterday in Peoria, IL. Genesee fell behind early by 23-9, but fought back in the second half. The Lady Cougars held Kalamazoo to only 20 second half points. Bianca Jones led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds. De'yara Burrell contributed with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
The Lady Cougars basketball team is lead by coach Christie McGee-Ross and assistant coach Mike Phifer and is made up of Cynnetha Bellinger of Binghamton, NY, De'yara Burrell, Shayla Fulton and Ciara Twillie all of Rochester, NY, Bianca Jones of Long Island City, NY, Jayvonna Kincannon of Buffalo, NY, Jamia Martin and Akebulynn Stephens of Syracuse, NY, Brittany McCray of Lyons, NY, Tierra Saunders of Bronx, NY, and Katelyn Thurber of Medina, NY.
Genesee will continue on in the NJCAA National Tournament when they take on fourth placed Parkland Community College (Champagne, IL) on Thursday at 5:00pm EST. The game can be seen live on the web at: www.icc.edu/njcaatournament
