HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (04/27/2011)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 21, Hampden-Sydney College junior Ian Christopher Giles received the Topham Chemistry Award, presented by Dr. Kevin M. Dunn, Elliott Professor of Chemistry. This award was established by classmates and friends of Richard W. Topham '65, professor of biochemistry and chairman of the department at the University of Richmond, who is an avid proponent of undergraduate research. The award is granted annually to the outstanding junior who exemplifies the ideals of Professor Topham.
A Patrick Henry Scholar, Ian serves as a Resident Advisor and plays offensive line on the varsity football team. He was named to the ODAC All-Academic Team for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Ian is a volunteer at Southside Community Hospital and is a member of the honorary society Chi Beta Phi (scientific), the Appeals Committee, the Garnet & Grey Society (admissions tour guide), the Pre-Health Society, the Society of '91 (leadership program), and the professional scientific fraternity, Alpha Chi Sigma. A chemistry and biology major, Ian graduated from Northside High School and is the son of James & Bonnie Giles of Roanoke.
