ANNVILLE, PA (08/14/2012)(readMedia)-- Beginning Monday, Aug. 27 and continuing throughout the fall semester as the presidential election nears, Lebanon Valley College's Vernon and Doris Bishop Library will present "Herblock's Presidents" exhibit. The show will display reproductions of work by the late Herbert Block, editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post.
Famously known as "Herblock," Block used his cartoons to defend the rights and freedoms of Americans. His first cartoon appeared in 1929 and supported forest conservation. He criticized communism, the Cold War, race relations, and McCarthyism, having coined the term in one of his cartoons. Block used his cartoons to advocate for civil rights and to take on issues including abortion, gun control and the tobacco industry.
Block's work won him three Pulitzer Prizes and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He said he never tired of working, and continued to draw into the 21st century. Block passed away six days before his 92nd birthday after suffering from a case of pneumonia. His last cartoon appeared in the Washington Post on August 26, 2001.
