LEWISTON, ME (05/07/2013)(readMedia)-- 78 Soldiers from the 136th Engineer Company (Vertical) are arriving at the Portland Jet Port on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 8:15 a.m. in preparation for departure to a training mission to El Salvador. The Soldiers are arriving by bus and will be staged just outside of North East Air Fixed Based Operations, 1011 Westbrook Street, Westbrook, Maine.
The 136th Engineer Company (Vertical) from Lewiston, Maine consists of carpenters, masons, electricians, and plumbers that construct and repair vertical infrastructure. Maine Soldiers are supporting an international exercise called Beyond the Horizon, 2013.
Beyond the Horizon is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored, U.S. Army South-planned and led annual humanitarian and civic assistance exercise. The exercise provides construction and medical assistance to partner nations throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean.
The exercise generally takes place in rural, underprivileged areas and is a major component of the U.S. military's regional engagement efforts and it affords a unique opportunity to train U.S. service members alongside partner nation personnel, while providing needed services to communities throughout the region.
The 136th Engineer Company (Vertical) Soldiers will receive a wide array of experience in how to plan and coordinate a broad spectrum of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief missions because of the hand-on work they will be doing in El Salvador.
