STEWART AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, NEWBURGH, NY (11/08/2010)(readMedia)-- The first operation C-5M Super Galaxy left here Saturday Nov. 6 for its duty station at Dover Air Force Base, Dover Delaware after a team led by New York Air National Guard members completely refurbished the interior in 26 days.
The plane, nicknamed the "Spirit of Old Glory" made a pass over the Army- Air Force football game being played at the United States Military Academy nearby, before heading for home base.
At a ceremony held on Friday, Nov. 5 to mark the completion of the project, Air Force General Raymond E. Johns Jr., the commander of the Air Mobility Command, praised the job done by the members of the 105th Airlift Wing's 105th Maintenance Squadron.
"The creativity and hard work demonstrated here have set conditions for success of next generation of Mobility Airmen," Johns said.
The first production C-5M arrived at Stewart Oct. 4 and underwent the final stages of its modernization.
The 105th Airlift Wing worked day and night redoing the interior of the C-5M interior. Not only did the 105th AW recondition and refurbish the first production C-5M, they also redefined how active duty, Reserves, Air Guard and industry partners go about solving Air Force-wide, large-scale complex problems with the end result of a more effective warfighting machine at a significant cost savings, Johns said.
The Total Force team developed and delivered an unprecedented standardized interior that will be applied to the entire C-5M fleet.
"While the C-5 has been supporting the warfighter for decades, you've made it even more capable," General Johns told Airmen and local officials who gathered at the base for the Nov. 5 ceremony.
