ALBANY, NY (10/29/2012)(readMedia)-- 2-1-1 New York reminds all New Yorkers that 2-1-1 is available for people who need help during Hurricane Sandy. In addition to dialing "2-1-1" from their phones or cell phones (311 in New York City), residents can also use 2-1-1- web sites and disaster guides to find the help and information they need about food, shelter, health care, evacuations and other storm related needs. 2-1-1 offers full language translation services.

Backed up by other 2-1-1 call centers across the state and country, 2-1-1 New York information and referral specialists use a comprehensive database to provide information and referrals to a wide range of government and charitable health and human services,

In addition, 2-1-1 call takers also offer important reassurance to those who are overwhelmed by the storm's impact on their family and homes, and will advocate as needed to see that callers' needs are met.

Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Jerome Hauer activated 2-1-1 over the weekend to assist state and local governments with Hurricane Sandy response. Attached is a copy of Commissioner Hauer's letter.
