UWNYS CEO Announces Plans to Step Down - Board Launches Search Process for New CEO

ALBANY, NY (06/12/2013)(readMedia)-- After 30 years at the helm of the United Way of New York State (UWNYS), Susan Hager has announced her plan to leave her position at the end of June. In response to this announcement, UWNYS Board of Directors Chair Karen Bilowith announces the formation of a search committee to recruit a new President and CEO for United Way of New York State.

"It has been a privilege to lead this organization. We have worked together on policy and budget advocacy, shared conferences and summer meetings, and helped each other during tough times. I believe we accomplished a great deal together," said Ms. Hager. "That said, I also believe that UWNYS is entitled to the fresh perspective and new ideas that a change in leadership can provide."

Under Ms. Hager's leadership, the United Way of New York State's advocacy efforts led to many important results benefiting member United Ways, community organizations and residents of New York State. These include the enactment of the State Earned Income Tax Credit; legislation to improve the charitable solicitation law, prompt payment and prompt contracting; legislation giving charities access to the state's purchasing program; legislation that expanded access to the School Breakfast Program for low income children; increased funding for childhood lead poisoning prevention; and the establishment of the 2-1-1 free telephone information and referral service, and securing funding for 2-1-1's implementation across the state.

"United Way of New York State was founded by local United Way organizations to provide a voice for collective action, and to assist members in creating impact locally. Susan's leadership has been invaluable to the creation of a high-caliber advocacy organization that is effective in influencing policy and strengthening local community-building efforts," said Karen Bilowith, Chair of the Board of Directors for UWNYS.

UWNYS is a membership organization serving local United Ways through public policy leadership, grants development, and assistance in addressing community issues. The Board is interested in candidates who are proven leaders with experience in government or the not for profit sectors. Candidates will be strategic thinkers who can work well with a diverse set of relationships within United Way and outside stakeholders.

The search committee, which will be chaired by Elizabeth Hood, a veteran UWNYS Board volunteer and past Board vice chair, includes other state Board volunteers and well as local United Way executives. Ms. Bilowith stated: "The UWNYS Board is committed to an open, thorough and transparent search for a new CEO. We welcome input from local United Ways and other stakeholders."

A position description will be posted in the near future. In the meantime, inquiries can be directed to Ms. Hood, the search committee chair, at search@uwnys.org.
