2010 Sculpture in the Streets Show Announced for Downtown Albany

Community Invited to Select a Sculpture in Upcoming Show

ALBANY, NY (04/30/2010)(readMedia)-- Downtown Albany's hugely successful public art installation, Sculpture in the Streets, sponsored by the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID), announces that its show for 2010 will return to the program's roots by hosting 16 pieces by J. Seward Johnson, an American artist best known for his life-sized sculptures of ordinary people expressed through contemporary life situations. In addition to the Downtown Albany BID, Omni Development Company, Inc. will be the show's presenting sponsor for 2010. Sculpture sponsors for this year's show include: Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce, Bombers Burrito Bar/Wolff's Biergarten, Capitalize Albany Corporation, Cass Hill Development, Center for Economic Growth (CEG), Columbia Development Companies, EYP, Hampton Inn & Suites (Downtown Albany), Legacy Banks, M&T Bank, The Palace Theatre, Tech Valley Communications, We Want Trader Joe's, Yono's, and Zone 5. The show will kick off with the annual Garden Party event on June 18, 2010 at Federal Plaza in Downtown Albany. Details about the event with ticket information will be announced soon.

"We are excited to again host pieces from Seward Johnson's collection. They've been very popular in the past so we anticipate a great reception as these realistic life-sized pieces populate Downtown Albany's streets from June 18th thru the end of October," extolled Georgette Steffens, Executive Director of the Downtown Albany BID.

In an effort to encourage community participation in the show, the public is invited to vote for one of three pieces to choose from which will appear in the exhibit: Generation Bridge, Catching Up, or Crossing Paths. Each $1 contribution entitles the donor to one vote - the goal is to raise $3000 to underwrite this sculpture as community-sponsored. Voting begins immediately and ends May 21, 2010. Go to albanysculpturevote.com to participate. Thank you to The Times Union for their sponsorship of the community vote. Details about the winning piece and the other pieces selected for the show will be announced late May.
