SYRACUSE, NY (07/26/2012)(readMedia)-- Hoffman Warnick LLC (HW), an intellectual property law firm headquartered in Albany, NY, with offices in Rochester, NY and Boston, MA, presents the Syracuse Patent Index. The Syracuse Patent Index tracks the number of patents issued and new applications published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to inventors residing in the greater Syracuse area (Onondaga County) each quarter. Hoffman Warnick similarly tracks patent activity in the Albany/Tech Valley region, greater Rochester area, and the Boston area. See http://tinyurl.com/HWPatentIndex. The Syracuse Patent Index is intended to provide a quarterly indicator of the technological trends of the Syracuse region.

Both the number of patents issued and new patent applications rose significantly in the second quarter of 2012 to record high levels. Michael Hoffman, partner at Hoffman Warnick states, "After dipping last quarter, we are pleased to see such a dramatic increase in both issuances and new applications. This would appear to reflect the positive technology based activity occurring in the Syracuse region." Hoffman added, "given the type of activity occurring at places like the Tech Garden, we expect to see the positive trend continue, which will hopefully lead to economic growth." Patent applications are published by the USPTO 18 months after their filing date, so the publication numbers should provide a good indicator of maturing R&D efforts that will soon have an economic impact as new products and technologies.
