Absentee Ballot Deadline for Military/Overseas Voters Extended

ALBANY, NY (03/27/2009)(readMedia)-- The New York State Board of Elections announced today a 6-day extension in the deadline for the acceptance of absentee ballots from US Military personnel and US Citizens living overseas for the Special Election in the New York 20th Congressional District.

On March 31, 2009, from 6am to 9pm, there will be a Special Election in the 20th Congressional District in New York. The candidates will be as follows:

DEMOCRATIC Scott Murphy

REPUBLICAN Jim Tedisco

INDEPENDENCE Scott Murphy

CONSERVATIVE Jim Tedisco

WORKING FAMILIES Scott Murphy

The New York 20th comprises all or part of the following counties: Columbia, Greene, Warren, Washington, Part of Saratoga, Part of Delaware, Part of Otsego, Part of Rensselaer, Part of Dutchess, and Part of Essex.

Internet users can look up the status of their voter registration and whether they live in the 20th District at: http://nymap.elections.state.ny.us/nysboe/.

All Military and Overseas ballots must be postmarked by March 30, 2009 and must be received by the appropriate County Board of Elections by April 13, 2009 to be accepted and counted. This represents an additional 6 days added to the original deadline of April 7, in accordance with a March 26th mutual agreement between the United States and the State Board (US v State of New York (09-cv-335-GLS-RFT)).

New York will also accept Federal Write-in Absentee Ballots cast by US Military personnel and US Citizens living overseas who are qualified to vote in New York. Voters can obtain the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot through the Federal Voter Assistance Program at: http://www.fvap.gov/.
