NEW YORK, NY (04/09/2017) (readMedia)-- Advocates and elected officials announced plans for a massive Tax March in New York City where thousands will demand to see President Donald Trump's tax returns. The Tax March, scheduled for Saturday, April 15th at 1:00PM, will begin at Bryant Park and end at Trump International Hotel and Tower at 1 Central Park West.
Standing in front of Trump's hotel, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer and advocacy groups Common Cause/NY, Strong Economy for All, NY Communities for Change, Working Families Party, Resist Here, and Vocal NY revealed plans for the Tax March, which is expected to draw over 30,000 participants on Tax Day.
March Coordinator Wes Shockley said, "Donald Trump owes it to all Americans to provide us with a transparent and corruption-free government and on this democratic priority he is failing. He needs to release his taxes. On nearly every issue, Donald Trump has failed to be transparent; he's failed to be a supporter of equality and fairness; he's failed to be a President for the people. Donald Trump is a failure, that's unlikely to change – but the least he could do is be transparent and honest about his motives for these abhorrent policies, and that starts with releasing his taxes."
"Donald Trump is the first elected president since before Richard Nixon who has refused to release his tax returns," said Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY. "Since he undeniably has financial interests around the world, Americans deserve to know if the president is acting on behalf of the public interest, or his business empire. The current state of affairs isn't just antithetical to open government, but poses a major threat to national security."
Since launching the Trump Taxes campaign last May, the national organization of Common Cause has generated over 150,000 petition signatures urging Trump to release his tax returns, and Common Cause continues to organize thousands of members to call on Congress to pass legislation requiring the President and Vice President to disclose their assets. This past December, Common Cause/NY alone delivered 400,000 petition signatures to Trump Tower demanding then-President-elect Trump fully divest from his businesses.
An ABC/Washington Post poll found that nearly three in four Americans (74 percent) agree that Donald Trump should release his tax returns, including a majority of Republicans (53 percent). Two in three Americans are concerned that Donald Trump is putting his own interests above the national interest. Releasing his taxes would address important questions about Trump's links to Russia, sources of income and debt, as well as his ties to other governments, banks, and businesses.
In addition to the New York City Tax March, other simultaneous marches are taking place in across the state, including Albany, Binghamton, Bethpage, Buffalo, Syracuse, as well as in an additional 42 states across the country and in 6 international locations.
