GEORGETOWN, TX (05/03/2013)(readMedia)-- Alan Ramos of Laredo has been awarded a Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad this summer. The scholarships, which are highly competitive, are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and are designed to help U.S. undergraduate students pursue academic studies abroad, particularly in areas outside of Western Europe and Australia.
Ramos is a sophomore philosophy major at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. He received a $4,000 scholarship he will use to study in Beijing, China, for eight weeks through CIEE's study abroad program.
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of an application plus a proposal for a "follow on project" that will be completed after they return from study abroad. For his project, Ramos plans to keep a blog about his experience abroad and encourage other students to study abroad when he returns.
Lopez is the son of Adriana and Gerardo Ramos of Laredo.
Southwestern University is a selective, nationally recognized undergraduate liberal arts college with an enrollment of 1,400 students. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in Texas. For more information on Southwestern, visit www.southwestern.edu.
