NO. SYRACUSE, NY (06/13/2016)(readMedia)-- (N. Syracuse, NY) June is the month in which we celebrate the dairy industry in our country. It all started back in 1937 to help promote the consumption of milk which provided essential vitamins and nutrients to children attending school and a growing population. Throughout the many decades since then the many varieties of tasty dairy products have provided us with riboflavin, Vitamin D, calcium, potassium and protein to help ensure healthy assorted lifestyles. These beneficial nutrients may help to better manage your weight, reduce your risk for high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers.

On Wednesday June 15th, Albany legislators have invited representatives of the dairy industry to the Legislative Office Building Well to celebrate the contributions made to the economy and local food supply. Senator Patty Ritchie, R-Heuvelton District 48, NY Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee and Assemblyman Bill MaGee, D-Oneida District 121 NY Chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee are this year's organizing hosts. The Celebration starts at 11am, with a Dairy Month Resolution to be presented at 12 noon. The event will feature samples of NY State milk and dairy products, exhibits and demonstrations from related agriculture groups and organizations and a presentation from the NY State Dairy Princess, Emily Ooms from Columbia County.

Celebrating June is National Dairy Month provides us with the opportunity to thank the hard working dairy farm families who milk the cows producing the milk and dairy products we enjoy every day. All the milk produced on farms go to local dairy processing and manufacturing plants who then add value by creating and packaging all the assorted dairy products we enjoy including ice cream, yogurt, cheese, whip cream, dips, sour cream, cream cheese, butter and many more.

Bruce W. Krupke, Executive Vice President says "recognizing June as Dairy Month is important in many ways, most importantly the role the industry plays in supplying our local food supply and then economically with the thousands of jobs provided in the production, processing, manufacturing and distribution of the many dairy products we all enjoy every day."

There are about 60,000 dairy farms in the US, 12,000 in the northeast and 4,600 in New York State. Each day, the average cow produces about 6.5 gallons of milk. A gallon of milk weighs about 8.3 pounds and it takes 10 pounds of milk to produce one pound of cheese. It takes 3 gallons of milk to manufacture one gallon of ice cream and 2 gallons to make a pound of butter.

Help celebrate the industry by choosing a cold glass of white or chocolate milk with your meals. Whether it's protein to help build and repair the muscle tissue of active bodies or vitamin A to help maintain healthy skin, dairy products are a natural nutrient powerhouse. Those are just a few of the reasons that you should celebrate dairy not just in June, but all year long.
