WESTPORT, CONN. (04/12/2012)(readMedia)-- Lexus debuted its all-new 2013 ES lineup at the New York International Auto Show last week, and one of the models unveiled was the first-ever hybrid version of the luxury sedan. Already popular at Lexus dealerships, the ES 350 sedan will soon get a more fuel-efficient iteration in the Lexus 300h hybrid, which is manufacturer-estimated to return around 40 mpg in its combined city/highway rating.
Featuring the same 3.5-liter V6 as the previous model, the 2013 Lexus ES 350 should maintain similar power, but adjustments to the suspension geometry and shock absorbers will improve ride comfort and handling. While it looks the same as its sibling, the new 2013 ES 300h with Lexus Hybrid Drive will use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and offer four different driving modes, including Normal, Sport, Eco and an EV mode that allows short-distance electric-only drives. Both the ES 350 and ES 300h will feature updated styling, including Lexus' new signature spindle grille, when they go on sale in August.
"The changes coming to the ES lineup update the models with Lexus' new, more-aggressive styling, but they also showcase just how far the automaker has come thanks to five generations of hybrid development," said Eric Brennan, general manager of Connecticut Lexus dealer New Country Lexus of Westport. "The new ES 300h is another example of Lexus taking a great luxury experience and bringing it to consumers that want the fuel savings and flexibility of a hybrid."
Beyond powertrain improvements, the 2013 ES gets a host of new features to enhance comfort and drivability. A more spacious cabin with increased rear legroom and available window shades allows passengers to travel more peacefully, while an ergonomically designed cockpit and thoughtfully placed control and information centers ensure that the driver's eyes stay on the road.
The ES 300h may be Lexus' latest effort to bring a wider variety of powertrain options to luxury buyers, but one of the automaker's SUVs, the RX, has been making news with its hybrid model as well. The 2012 Lexus RX 450h was recently named the top luxury SUV hybrid on a Cars.com list of the best hybrids for the money in 2012. After considering base MSRPs and combined mpg ratings, Cars.com determined that the RX 450h is the most affordable in its class.
This month, Lexus is rolling out a refreshed RX lineup for the 2013 model year that also includes the new family grille for the first time. Both the 2013 RX 350 and RX 450h feature interior enhancements, like a new steering wheel and a metallic accent on the glove box, while the RX 450h will get a new Sport driving mode that improves steering responsiveness and shifting. A separate RX trim, the 2013 RX 350 F Sport, will arrive at dealerships in July featuring a variety of performance and styling enhancements.
"Lexus is great at adapting their vehicles to create a variety of appealing options for owners and their families," Brennan added. "Whether it's adding an all-new hybrid powertrain like in the 2013 ES, creating a more comfortable cabin or giving customers great value and versatility for their money, Lexus is constantly finding ways to improve each model."
