Ambra Battilana Gutierrez, Carrie Goldberg, the Women's Prison Association et al Join Panel on the ASA

Hosted by Safe Horizon and the NYC Alliance Against Sexual Assault

NEW YORK, NY (08/27/2020) (readMedia)-- On Monday, Safe Horizon and the NYC Alliance Against Sexual Assault will host a panel with Ambra Battilana Gutierrez, a particpant and expert from the Women's Prison Assocation, Bridie Farrell, Carrie Goldberg, State Senator Brad Hoylman and Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal on the barriers to seeking justice in the courts and advancing statute of limitations reform like the Adult Survivors Act (ASA).

Passed in 2019, the Child Victims Act allows timebarred child sex abuse survivors a one year lookback window to file a civil claim against their abusers and the institutions that were negligent in preventing the violence. In a single year, there have already been over 2,000 cases filed in New York State. Governor Andrew Cuomo just signed legislation extending the window another year until August 14th, 2021 to allow more time-barred survivors to file civil litigation against their abusers. But for individuals who were adults when they were sexually abused, the opportunity to seek justice in civil court remains very limited. The Adult Survivors Act -- which is currently before the New York State Legislature - would create a one-year lookback window for survivors who were 18 years of age or older when they were abused.

Two weeks ago, Gutierrez and Goldberg, along with Jessica Mann, Dominique Huett, Dawn Dunning, Marissa Hoechstetter and Evelyn Yang, penned a letter to Governor Cuomo asking him to support the Adult Survivors Act.
