Americus Native Receives Two AIA Georgia Awards

SAVANNAH, GA (03/08/2013)(readMedia)-- Americus native, Americus High School graduate, and Savannah College of Art and Design alumnus Matthew Hart was recently recognized with the 2012 American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Georgia Emerging Professional Award and the AIA Georgia Presidential Citation.

Hart's passion for art and design started with homemade, wooden blocks and then transitioned to thousands of plastic LEGOs, eventually leading him to pursue the field of architecture at SCAD.. The Boy Scouts of America was also a core influence on his professional development, instilling in him qualities such as perseverance, commitment, and service before self that have benefited him greatly in his work with AIA.

Hart is active in all levels of AIA leadership, but particularly in the AIA South Atlantic region. His efforts to drive an associate leadership initiative that allows members to serve on regional boards resulted in a nationally supported resolution that will go into effect this year as a part of the AIA Bylaws. His leadership, innovation, and commitment to his community have also been recognized through this honor.

Candidates for the award are selected based on contributions to the advancement of architectural design and design discourse; contributions to the advancement of AIA and its leadership, either through local, state, or national components; contributions to the advancement of architectural education toward the betterment of the local community; and evidence of the nurturing and mentoring of next generation of architects.

Hart currently serves as an intern architect and project manager at IPG Architects and Planners in Valdosta, Ga.
