SAVANNAH, GA (01/22/2014)(readMedia)-- Fashion student and Fort Worth native Rachel Johnson was one of nine Savannah College of Art and Design students selected as an YMA Fashion Scholar for 2014.
Johnson was encouraged in her interest in the arts by her Trinity Valley School teacher, Joanne Mulroy. Through this arts program she learned about SCAD and decided to attend. Johnson is excited to push the limits of her creativity and represent the knowledge SCAD fosters with this recent achievement.
"It was so inspirational to be surrounded by people in the fashion industry and be honored with fellow classmates at the YMA Awards Dinner," Johnson said. "I encourage everyone to take part in the Fashion Scholarship Fund case study, because it is a great experience regardless of if you win and the opportunities are endless."
The rigorous application process for the scholarship begins in the fall and ends in December, when approximately 100 students are selected by some of the top names in fashion to receive a $5,000 scholarship and fashion mentorship. In years past, 100 percent of named scholars have also been placed in internships with such renowned organizations as Neiman Marcus, Kenneth Cole, Polo Ralph Lauren and Saks Fifth Avenue.
All nine students will be honored Jan. 8, at the YMA Scholarship Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. This is the seventh consecutive year that SCAD students have been named YMA scholars.
