SAVANNAH, GA (05/17/2012)(readMedia)-- Shalena Baker, a first-year student in the Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) program at Armstrong Atlantic State University, has been selected for a 2012 national summer internship with HealthEast Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. The internship is sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare Diversity, an affiliate organization of the American Hospital Association.
The Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a paid internship for graduate students pursuing a career in health care management in a national hospital or health center. In the past, SEP has placed students in a variety of nationally and internationally renowned healthcare organizations including Johns Hopkins Health Center, the Department of Veteran Affairs and Kaiser Permanente. SEP interns make mentor connections that will support them for the rest of their careers in the hospital industry. Baker is one of 30 students nationwide that was selected for this prestigious program during 2012.
As part of her internship, Baker will be working as part of the HealthEast Corporate Human Resources Talent Acquisition Team. Her responsibilities will include developing and managing projects such as process redesign and program implementation, having active involvement with and exposure to a variety of managerial and leadership issues and participating as an active member in leadership and executive planning sessions.
Baker is excited to use skills she learned at Armstrong to carry out these interning tasks. "I am really excited to be a HealthEast Care System intern. It is a great opportunity to apply the theories I have learned in the classroom at a large and reputable health care system such as HealthEast Care System," said Baker. "I am looking forward to showing everyone in Minnesota what Armstrong Atlantic University students have to offer."
MHSA program coordinator, Joey Crosby, is proud that Baker will represent Armstrong at the 2012 Summer Enrichment Program. "We are very proud of Shalena, and she is certainly deserving of this honor to participate in the Summer Enrichment Program," said Crosby. "We have had several of our minority MHSA students apply for this program over the years, but she is the first one to be selected. We're very excited for her."
