LATHAM, NY (12/09/2025) (readMedia)-- New York Army National Guard Capt. John Anderton, a Niskayuna resident, recently took command of a Latham-based New York National Guard helicopter company.

Anderton, who enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 2016, took command of Alpha Company of the 3rd Battalion, 142nd Attack Helicopter Battalion during a Nov. 16 ceremony at Army Aviation Support Facility #3.

Anderton originally joined the New York Army National Guard as a Uh-60 Black Hawk helicopter mechanic in Delta Company of the 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation. After earning his officers commission through Officer Candidate School in 2018 he attended flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama and qualified as a UH-60M Black Hawk pilot.

He served in the battalion's Delta Company as a platoon leader and took part in a 2021 rotation to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. In 2022 he took over a platoon in Alpha Company and deployed to the Middle East in Support of Operation Spartan. He served as the site lead in Erbil, Iraq.

His most recent assignment was as the assistant operations officer for the battalion's headquarters company.

Anderton is a 2008 graduate of Mohonasen High School and earned a degree from Fordham University in 2012.

In civilian life, Anderton is a sworn member of the New York State Police and serves as a pilot assigned to the aviation division.

He and his wife Kayla will be welcoming their first child this coming winter.
