Ashburnham local Jonathan Sargent wins historic-preservation honor

SAVANNAH, GA (08/29/2013)(readMedia)-- Oakmont Regional High School graduate, Wesleyan University undergraduate and Savannah College of Art and Design historic preservation graduate student Jonathan Sargent has been named an Association for Preservation Technology International Scholar for 2013.

APT is one of leading resources on preservation technology throughout North America and Sargent's abstract, "The Guaranty Building: The Restoration of a Terra Cotta Landmark," was selected for its level of illustrated research and the conceptual excellence presented.

"In my eyes, the process of discovering history and reconnecting with the past has the power to connect generations and communities, which is why I'm so passionate about historic preservation," Sargent said.

All student scholars are granted registration to the annual APT Conference in New York City, hotel and travel expenses and have access to extensive networking opportunities with industry experts and professionals. Sargent said he is thrilled to have the opportunity to share his research and connect with individuals across the country who share his passion for restoration and preservation.

"For me, it's not about the past but about the past's ability to influence the present and build a brighter future. Whether the past is dark or bright for certain groups of people in certain areas, a shared heritage and sense of community has the power to do some real good in the world today," he said.

The Association for Preservation Technology International, APT, is a cross-disciplinary organization dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. APT members hail from more than 30 countries and include preservationists, architects, engineers, conservators, students, technicians and other persons directly involved in the applications of methods and materials to maintain, conserve and protect historic structures and sites for future use and appreciation.
