Attorney General James and Advocates To Hold Listening Session With Victims of Online Scams
Group will hear from New Yorkers who have fallen victim to online fraud and discuss how to better protect working people from tech enabled scams; New report from Consumer Federation of America shows NYers are losing at least $6.5B every single year to online scams
ELMONT, NY (03/11/2026) (readMedia)-- Tomorrow, Attorney General Letitia James will join advocates to hear from New Yorkers who have fallen victim to online fraud and discuss how elected leaders can better protect them from tech enabled scams. The event comes just one day after the Consumer Federation of America published a report that revealed New Yorkers are losing at least $6.5B every single year to online scams - thanks in part to social media companies who are profiting from New Yorkers' misfortune.

In recent years, social media companies - especially Meta's Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp - have profited heavily by serving fraudulent ads to unsuspecting victims. Today, scammers are targeting seniors, vulnerable immigrant communities and more with sophisticated efforts to steal their money and personal information, including cryptocurrency investment scams, fake law enforcement ads, and AI-generated phone scams.
Attorney General James has long led the fight to hold scammers and predatory companies accountable, having recently sued Zelle for failing to crack down on scams, disrupted a fraudulent crypto scam targeting Russian communities, and warned New Yorkers about dangerous investment scams. Now, she and other lawmakers will hear from New Yorkers and discuss how they plan to stop scammers from hurting everyday people.
