SAVANNAH, GA (05/28/2013)(readMedia)-- SCAD B.F.A. Motion Media Design student Morgan Murphy, recently won first place at the annual Sand Arts Festival held on Tybee Island's North Beach. Murphy won top honors in the Wind Sculpture category.
The imaginative sculpture "Sun Mill" features an oversized pinwheel design complete with raised layers that spin, reminding the viewer of planets and moons in orbit. Murphy and teammates Andrew Maynard and John Sibert created the cosmic design collaboratively.
Murphy and the team's sculpture concept was inspired by a quote: "We are all connected; To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically" -Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
The competition showcases students' talents by inviting them to design and build inventive, eye-catching sand sculptures in a variety of categories. Students representing all schools and disciplines competed for $5,000 in prizes.
Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April. Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules.
