BMW M6 Returns More Powerful, Fuel Efficient than Ever

New High-Performance Sports Car to Come in Convertible and Coupe Models

PEABODY, MASS. (02/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Leave it to BMW to find a way to pack a 560-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 into its 6 Series to create the 2012 BMW M6 Convertible, the brand's most powerful production drop-top ever. While the third-generation M6 will reach BMW dealerships in open-air form this June following a two-year hiatus, the ultra-sporty two-door will also be available as a hardtop coupe later in the summer for the 2013 model year.

Featuring a raked-back appearance, the new M6 takes the already aggressive BMW 6 Series design and turns the volume up to 11. With a revised front fascia that directs more cooling air into the engine and flared rims that cover the massive brakes needed to slow such a powerful vehicle down, the M6 has the bark to go along with its bite.

"There are few vehicles that combine power and style like the next-generation BMW M6," said Marshal Cabot, general manager of Greater Boston BMW dealership BMW of Peabody. "Though the M6 was only gone for a couple years, it's amazing to see the advancements that BMW has made during that time. Drivers not only get to boast of more power compared to the previous generation; they'll also spend less time at the gas pump."

BMW claims that the third-generation M6 will be about 30 percent more fuel efficient than the last model, all without sacrificing any of the power and refinement that BMW drivers demand. A big key to the puzzle is the direct-injection and turbocharging technology used in the new V8 engine, which achieves its efficiency while still offering about a 10-percent increase in power compared to the previous generation's naturally aspirated V10.

In addition to its new drivetrain, weight also plays an important role in the new M6's improved fuel efficiency. BMW describes the M6 Coupe's and M6 Convertible's respective 7.3 and 7.7 pounds-per-horsepower ratios as substantial improvements from those of their predecessors. To drop the pounds, BMW engineers used a mix of lightweight materials in key areas, including a high-strength carbon-fiber roof for the Coupe. Both the M6 Coupe and Convertible have aluminum doors and thermoplastic front fenders that cut weight without sacrificing durability or strength.

While power and performance will be a big draw for many BMW enthusiasts, the M6's luxurious interior means the car can be enjoyed either at high speeds or in traffic. With Merino leather covering the front and rear seats and adjustable thigh supports and side bolsters for the front passengers, the M6 maintains its comfort even during the tightest of turns.

"What we see in the new M6 is the culmination of all of BMW's work in recent years," Cabot noted. "The car makes use of the latest technology to reduce weight, increase performance and reduce fuel consumption. Those technologies will eventually trickle down to the rest of the lineup sooner than you would think."
