ALBANY, NY (06/22/2011)(readMedia)-- Steve L. Brooks, a volunteer and member of Northern Federal Credit Union's board of directors, was named a 2011 Outstanding Volunteer by the Credit Union Association of New York at their Annual Meeting and Convention held recently in Lake Placid, N.Y.
The Volunteer of the Year award recognizes individuals who exemplify commitment to a credit union or to the New York credit union movement. Brooks won the award in the asset category of $50-$250 million.
"Volunteers like Steve are an essential part of what makes credit unions uniquely able to help members build a better financial future," said William J. Mellin, the Association's president/CEO.
Brooks has been a loyal member of Northern FCU for more than 25 years, and has served as a highly dedicated volunteer director for more than a decade. Last year, he was instrumental in the success of two key initiatives at the credit union: the development of a Young Adult Advisory Board and the opening of a new "green" branch in West Carthage.
Brooks actively assisted in developing the Young Adult Advisory Board, which is aimed at engaging and serving members age 19-25. During the process, he applied his experiences as a primary school teacher for more than 30 years to help develop educational and expanded financial services for youth and young adults. As chair of the credit union's Building Committee, he was also instrumental in developing the credit union's sixth branch, a "green" facility that features a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar panels, recycled materials and advanced technology to conserve natural resources.
By lending his time and diverse expertise, Brooks has continued to be an invaluable member of Northern FCU's leadership.
The Credit Union Association of New York has served as the trade association for the state's credit unions for 94 years. New York credit unions have assets of more than $53 billion and serve 4.5 million members. To learn more about the Association, visit www.cuany.org.
