Long Island credit unions help raise $20K for 9/11 first responders
ALBANY, NY (11/21/2016)(readMedia)-- Credit unions from the Long Island and New York City-area helped raise $20,000 for the FeelGood Foundation, an advocacy group that provides direct support to 9/11 first responders. The foundation also educates the public and lawmakers about the ailments faced by individuals who were at ground zero during and after the terrorist attacks.
The credit unions raised the funds during a Sept. 12 golf outing held at the Bellport Country Club. More than 102 golfers participated in the tournament, which was hosted by the New York Credit Union Association's Long Island Chapter.
This year's event marked the 25th anniversary of the annual tournament.
"Credit unions on Long Island have a long and commendable history of community outreach and giving, and no one is more deserving of these efforts than the brave men and women who selflessly put the well-being of others ahead of their own on Sept. 11, 2001," said NYCUA President/CEO William J. Mellin. "All across the nation, and certainly here in New York, credit unions work day in and day out for the betterment of their community and members. This 'people helping people' philosophy is part of what separates credit unions from other types of financial institutions."
The New York Credit Union Association serves as the trade association for the state's credit unions, which collectively hold more than $73 billion in assets and serve more than 5.3 million members.
