GEORGETOWN, TX (11/02/2012)(readMedia)-- Ben Cardiff of Boerne was one of 25 students who presented talks at the 8th Annual Texas Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, which was held at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches Oct. 26-27.

Cardiff presented a talk titled "Distractions Can Be a Real Pain," which was based on a data-based model he has developed related to distracted driving. The model includes trends in crashes of various types, population, cellphone subscribers and text message increases.

Cardiff is a senior computational mathematics major at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. His talk was based on research he is doing for his capstone project under the direction of Therese Shelton, associate professor of mathematics.

Cardiff is the son of Hal and Alisa Cardiff. He is a graduate of Samuel V. Champion High School in Boerne.
